Thesis tutor and doctoral training activities

Students enrolled in programmes regulated by Royal Decree 99/2011 must undertake training activities based on their previous education and the activities offered in the corresponding doctoral programme.

The thesis tutor is responsible for the adequacy of the doctoral student's training at the beginning of the programmes. The academic committee of the programme will assign a tutor to each doctoral student once they have formalised their enrolment.

All doctoral students will have access to their personalised Doctoral Student's Activity Document (“DAD”) via the Academic Monitoring Portal for Doctoral Students. This document will include all the activities that the tutor has deemed suitable for the doctoral student to undertake. It will be periodically revised by the tutor and evaluated by the academic committee in charge of the doctoral programme.

The training activities offered can be organised by:

  1. The International School for Postgraduate Studies (EIP).
  2. The Doctoral Programmes (see the website of the programme in question).

Thesis supervisor

The University of Granada will assign a doctoral thesis supervisor who will be ultimately responsible for leading all the research tasks of the doctoral student.

To be eligible, thesis supervisors and co-supervisors must have conducted at least one recognised research period in accordance with Royal Decree 1086/1989. If they hold an academic or administrative position for which this is not applicable, equivalent merits must be accredited. The academic committee of each programme may propose complementary criteria which must be consulted with the programme itself.

Current criteria of the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity (CNEAI) can be found on the following website .

Supervisors of theses within a doctoral programme under Royal Decree 99/2011 must apply within the corresponding programme to be included as teaching staff or external collaborators using the form that can be obtained here .

Co-supervision of the doctoral thesis

The doctoral thesis may be co-supervised by other doctoral degree holders for academic reasons such as interdisciplinary subject matter or programmes developed with national or international collaboration. This requires prior authorisation from the academic committee which may be subsequently revoked if, in the opinion of the academic committee, the co-supervision does not benefit the development of the thesis.

In exceptional cases, co-supervision by more than two supervisors may be acceptable. This will be authorised only in duly justified cases and for reasons such as interdisciplinary subject matter or programmes developed with national or international collaboration. Co-supervision with a first-time thesis supervisor, contemplated in some programmes, must also be justified in the doctoral thesis proposal and will not be cumulative to co-supervision due to interdisciplinary subject matter or national or international collaboration.

PLEASE NOTE:

The doctoral programme will initially assign one of the signatories of the “Supervision Commitment” document (Compromiso de supervisión) provided in the application for admission as supervisor, as long as he or she meets the requirements.

The doctoral thesis proposal must include the “Co-supervision Report” document. After the defence of the doctoral thesis proposal, the corresponding evaluation committee will report on the appropriateness of the co-supervision, which will be approved by the doctoral programme and the corresponding doctoral school. Once it has been approved, the thesis co-supervisor will be included in the doctoral student's academic record.

The proposed co-supervision, once the doctoral thesis proposal has been approved, will be implemented by resubmitting the proposal through ‘SOLICITUDES’ (APPLICATIONS). The programme will determine its feasibility and whether or not a new defence is required. If the proposed supervisor is not part of the doctoral programme (as a lecturer or assistant lecturer), the application for the proposed supervisor to be part of the doctoral programme (form) must also be submitted.

Doctoral thesis proposal

The doctoral thesis proposal will be submitted through the Academic Monitoring Portal for Doctoral Students:

  • The first time it is submitted, it will be done in the tab: ‘PLAN DE INVESTIGACIÓN’ (DOCTORAL THESIS PROPOSAL).
  • On subsequent occasions, it will be done in the ‘SOLICITUDES’ (APPLICATIONS) tab (total or partial modification of the doctoral thesis proposal).

The doctoral thesis proposal will be submitted in the following cases:

  • Once the student has been definitively admitted to the corresponding doctoral programme. Doctoral students enrolled in doctoral programmes under Royal Decree 99/2011 will submit their proposal through the Academic Monitoring Portal for Doctoral Students (which can be accessed via your University of Granada “Acceso identificado” account) within the deadlines established by the doctoral programme. Doctoral students enrolled in programmes regulated by other decrees will submit it via email to --LOGIN--c0ac2b70b250ce9b2ac838360f9030fbugr[dot]es .

Students who have been admitted on the condition that they complete certain complementary training will not be able to upload the doctoral thesis proposal until its completion has been accredited.

  • When the current doctoral thesis proposal is totally or partially modified.
  • When changes in thesis supervision are proposed.
  • SPECIFIC CASE: In the event that the first doctoral thesis proposal is not approved by the doctoral programme academic committee, the doctoral student will have a period of 6 months to submit and defend a new proposal. This new proposal will have to be submitted through the tab: ‘PLAN DE INVESTIGACIÓN’ (DOCTORAL THESIS PROPOSAL).

Applications and Forms

Supervision commitment document

Article 14 of the UGR Regulations on Official Doctoral Studies and Doctoral Degree Certificates stipulates in point two of the aforementioned article with regard to doctoral training that:

The University of Granada will establish the duties of doctoral student supervisors by means of a commitment document signed by the University, the doctoral student, their tutor and their supervisor. This commitment will be signed after admission and will include a conflict resolution procedure and will cover aspects related to intellectual or industrial property rights that may be generated within the context of doctoral programmes.

The above document can be downloaded from the ACADEMIC MONITORING PORTAL FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS (DOCTORAL THESIS PROPOSAL tab).

  • When will the doctoral student sign the supervision commitment document?

It must be submitted at the time of the defence if only one thesis supervisor has been proposed and the same one is already assigned in the Academic Monitoring Portal.

The signature of the director of the school will NOT be required for the presentation of the supervision commitment document, as this will be included later.

  • Any other situation:

In the case of co-supervision or changes in thesis supervision, the supervision commitment document must be presented after the proposed supervision is approved by the corresponding Doctoral School and this appointment appears in the Academic Monitoring Portal for Doctoral Students.

In this case, the student will print out the aforementioned commitment document and collect the corresponding signatures. The original will be sent to the International School for Postgraduate Studies so that, once signed by the director of the corresponding doctoral school, it can be filed in the student's academic record.

The signature of the director of the school will NOT be required for the presentation of the supervision commitment document, as this will be included later.

Frequently asked questions

  • I submitted my doctoral thesis proposal and the title that I included in the text field does not match the one included in the doctoral thesis proposal
Once the proposal has been sent for evaluation and your supervisor has issued a report, the title of the doctoral thesis can no longer be modified.
- If it has not been evaluated, you can undo the submission of the research proposal for evaluation (curved arrow to the right).
- If the proposal has been evaluated by your thesis supervisor or is in another evaluation stage prior to the defence, inform doctoradoinformacion@ugr.es that the title included in the text field does not match the one included in the pdf of the doctoral thesis proposal.
- If you wish to change the pdf of the research proposal and it has been evaluated by your thesis supervisor or is in another evaluation stage prior to the defence, ask doctoradoinformacion@ugr.es for information on how to change the initially included pdf.
  • When entering the monitoring portal, the following message appears: “Sobrepasado tiempo sin subir plan de investigación” (“Time exceeded without uploading research proposal”)

Doctoral students have one year to submit and defend their research proposal. If this requirement has not been met, the above message is displayed when logging in to the monitoring portal.

  • Can I request to submit the research proposal after the deadline?

This request can be made to the doctoral programme. In this case, you will have to file two applications through the monitoring portal:

1. Application to submit the doctoral thesis proposal after the deadline:

- Application type: ‘OTRAS SOLICITUDES’ (OTHER APPLICATIONS)
- Text: You must indicate the following: “Es una solicitud para presentar el plan de investigación que no se aportó en el plazo establecido por los motivos que se indica en el documento adjunto” (“This is an application to present the doctoral thesis proposal that was not submitted within the established period for the reasons indicated in the attached document)”
- Attached file: pdf file containing the text of the reasons for not submitting the doctoral thesis proposal.

2. Application including the doctoral thesis proposal:

- Application type: CAMBIOS EN EL PLAN DE TRABAJO: EN TEMÁTICA Y/O DIRECCIÓN DE TESIS (CHANGES IN RESEARCH PROPOSAL: SUBJECT AND/OR THESIS SUPERVISION) (This is the correct option even if you are not changing the plan).
- Text: Indicate the title of the doctoral thesis proposal.
- Attached file: pdf document of the doctoral thesis proposal.

Both applications will be sent to the doctoral programme for assessment. If approved, the doctoral thesis proposal will be incorporated into the ‘PLAN DE INVESTIGACIÓN’ (DOCTORAL THESIS PROPOSAL) tab of the Monitoring Portal to be assessed by the thesis supervisor and to begin the procedure for the defence. If it is rejected, the procedure for cancelling the doctoral student's link to the doctoral studies will be initiated.
