Scheme for examination sessions and student continuance

Descargar versión en PDF

Our university's scheme for examination sessions and student continuance is established by the UGR Continuance Regulations for Undergraduate and Master's Students (approved in an ordinary session of the Governing Council on 24 June 2016).

Minimum academic performance required for student continuance

New students must pass at least six credits corresponding to the first year of their curriculum, regardless of their mode of study.

By the end of their second academic year in a degree programme, full-time and part-time students must have passed at least 18 and 12 credits, respectively.

Examination sessions

Students registered at the University of Granada are entitled to two examination sessions (one ordinary and one extraordinary session) per course and academic year.

In order to pass a course, you may attend up to six examination sessions, including both ordinary and extraordinary sessions. An examination session will only count as used up if you sit an exam and a grade is recorded in the corresponding official examination results. If the result recorded is “Assessment not taken”, you will not be deemed to have used up an exam session.

If you do not pass a course in your sixth examination session, you will not be allowed to remain registered on the corresponding master's degree programme at the University of Granada.

Special examination session

You may request a special examination session for a course that you took in previous academic years if you have no more than two courses left to complete your degree (not counting the master's dissertation). This special examination session will be subject to the requirements set out in the course guide corresponding to the previous academic year. If you attend this special examination session but do not obtain a pass, you will only be allowed to attend one of the two remaining examination sessions for that academic year. If you do not attend the special examination session, it will not count towards the two exam sessions per academic year nor towards the total maximum of 6 sessions allowed. If you wish to apply for this special examination session, you must submit a request to the Direction of the International School for Postgraduate Studies (EIP) within the period established in the official calendar. Please use the corresponding form available on the UGR e-Administration Platform.

Maximum periods of study

Full-time master's degree students will have the following maximum deadlines to complete their studies:

a) For 60-credit master's degrees, up to three years from initial registration in the degree programme.
b) For master's degrees of between 61 and 90 credits, up to four years from initial registration in the degree programme.
c) For master's degrees of between 91 and 120 credits, up to five years from initial registration in the degree programme.

For all purposes, the master's dissertation is considered a course. Therefore, in order to pass it, you are allowed two examination sessions per academic year and a total maximum of six sessions. Likewise, if you have already exhausted your maximum period of study and the only course you have left to pass is your master's dissertation, you will be allowed to attend one additional examination session, provided that your degree has not been discontinued and that you have not used up all six sessions allowed.

The maximum periods of study for students registered on a part-time basis will be double those set out above for full-time students. However, if the student changes the mode to full-time, the permitted period of study will only be doubled in proportion to the number of academic years registered in part-time mode.

Dropping out of studies

You will be considered to have dropped out of a master's degree if you have voluntarily stopped registering on your degree for two consecutive academic years, even if you keep your official academic transcript open at the University of Granada.

If you met the minimum academic performance requirements at the time of dropping out, you may apply for re-enrolment. In this case, the coordinator of the corresponding master's degree will decide whether to accept or reject your readmission request.

Consequences of not achieving the required minimum academic performance or exhausting your maximum period of study

If you fail to comply with the established academic performance conditions or you have exhausted the periods of study set out above, you will not be allowed to continue studying your degree. However, after at least three academic years have elapsed since the issuing of the corresponding decision, you may file an appeal to the Rector (only once) requesting your enrolment in the same degree programme, as established in the UGR access and admission regulations.

You may also register on other degree programmes at the University of Granada, provided that there are vacant places and that you comply with all applicable rules and procedures. If once registered on the new degree, you also fail to comply with the academic performance conditions or exhaust the maximum period of study established, you will not be allowed to pursue any other official studies at the University of Granada. However, after at least two academic years have elapsed since the issuing of the corresponding decision, you may file an appeal to the Rector (only once) requesting your enrolment in an official university degree, as established in the UGR access and admission regulations. If you are unable to meet the academic performance or continuance requirements established in these regulations due to exceptional and well-documented circumstances, you may request an exception to these requirements from the UGR Committee for Continuance Standards.
