Scientific Research, Publication and Ethics

Scientific publishing is focused on distribution of new results, enabling their visibility to the wider scientific community, but also helping researchers to obtain their academic promotion and fundings for the future projects. Constant pressure is well-described by a common expression 'publish or perish', so in order to survive every scientist should learn and master all phases of the process. That is today necessary because even the most original scientific results can be seriously and irreversibly neglected if not presented properly. Within this three-day course we will review necessary skills and procedures needed to publish a high-quality scientific paper, discuss the problem of plagiarism and self-plagiarism as well as some other issues of ethical scientific research and publication, and will focus on quite often sensitive question of establishing and keeping a good relationship with your PhD advisor.

1. Scientific Publishing: How to Survive?

We will go through the entire process of scientific publishing from different perspectives, not only from the author's viewpoint but also from the editor's and reviewer's side, to see common mistakes more clearly and discuss how to avoid them. The most important questions addressed will include: Why, where and how to publish your scientific results? How to cooperate and publish with your collaborators? What questions to address while preparing a concept of your paper? What is the structure of the scientific paper and how to present your data properly? How to fight procrastination and finally finish the paper? How and when to choose a journal and how to prepare the final version of your manuscript for submission? How to successfully communicate with editors and reviewers? What to do after your paper is published and what to do if it is finally rejected?”

2. Best ways to avoid plagiarism and autoplagiarism

Plagiarism and autoplangialism are among the most common violations of responsible conduct in scientific research, which in any case can have very serious and long-lasting consequences for your scientific and professional career. Although the definition of these violations is relatively simple, there is a very wide gray zone where it is not always easy to be sure that you are acting properly. Therefore, we will consider how to avoid possible problems, since often plagiarism or autoplarism can be done even without any bad intentions.

3. How to establish and maintain good relationship with your PhD advisor?

The choice of your advisor is one of the most important steps in your academic career, and quality mentorship is one of the most important preconditions for preparing a high-quality PhD Thesis. We will consider what is important for establishing a good long-time relationship, including what the advisors expect from their PhD students and vice versa, and how to harmonize these expectations. We will also discuss which are potential problems and recommend how to solve them if they can not be avoided, as well as recommend how to cooperate and publish with your advisor.
