In Spain, an official master's degree (known as máster oficial or Máster Universitario) is a set of regulated postgraduate courses valid throughout Spain and the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). These programmes have full academic validity and some of them are licensure master's degrees (másteres habilitantes), which means that they authorise the holder to engage in regulated professions.
To be admitted to a master's degree you must hold a licenciatura degree (full undergraduate degree), a diplomatura degree (3-year undergraduate degree), a grado degree (bachelor's degree) or another equivalent qualification.
Master's degrees can be oriented either towards professional specialisation or towards research initiation. The duration of a master's degree is 1 or 2 years and comprises between 60 and 120 ECTS credits. Upon completion, you will be awarded a master's degree, which provides access to doctoral programmes.
UGR-specific master's degrees are programmes approved by our University that focus on providing advanced training and professional specialisation while offering a more flexible and diversified type of education, in line with society's needs.
For admission, a university degree is required. Due to their characteristics, these programmes do not give access to doctoral studies.
The online pre-registration application, available at the “Distrito Único Andaluz (DUA)” Platform, allows you to apply for a master's programme even if you do not yet hold the required entrance qualification; however, you will have to provide this qualification by the deadline established for each stage.
In these cases, your application will be provisionally processed by the deadline specified in our annual decision. For admission to a master's programme, you must submit proof of the following requirements:
a) Possession of an official Spanish university degree or equivalent, or a degree from another country in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) which makes you eligible for Master’s degree-level studies in the issuing country.
b) Possession of a foreign degree, which is not required to be officially recognised in Spain if it undergoes a qualification equivalency check. In this procedure, we will verify that the level of training you received when completing your degree is equivalent to that of an official Spanish degree. Likewise, we will check that your degree gives you the right to be considered for admission to postgraduate studies in the issuing country. Acceptance of your qualification does not imply that your degree will gain official recognition (homologación) nor that it will be approved for purposes other than accessing a master's degree programme. If you hold a non-recognised degree from a country outside the EHEA, you must request a qualification equivalency check prior to the admission process to ensure its comparability with an official Spanish degree.
c) Some master's degree programmes require applicants to hold a specific degree.
In addition, you will be asked to submit your official academic transcript, which will be taken into account when assessing your application. If you do not submit this document, it will be assumed that you obtained the minimum pass mark.
To access an official master's degree, you must hold a university degree. Once you are admitted, you must complete your registration online. To do so, the University of Granada will send you an email to the address you provided in your pre-registration application with a link to the Automatrícula (self-registration) platform.
As part of the pre-registration process, besides providing your personal details and the name of the master's degree programm(es) you are interested in, you must present all the requested documents in PDF format. Depending on your mode of study, the minimum number of credits that you must take is as follows:
a) Full-time registration:
In order to be considered a full-time student, students must take the 60 ECTS that make up a master's degree programme. This is the standard mode of study for new master's students at the University of Granada. If your master's degree has more than 60 ECTS credits, you will be considered a full-time student if you register for 60 credits in the first academic year.
b) Part-time registration:
You will be registered as a part-time student if you take at least 24 ECTS credits, but not more than 42.
New students wishing to study part-time must apply for this mode of study within the period established in the official academic calendar.
Fees per credit are established by Decree of the Regional Government of Andalusia. You can check them at the following link: Calendar and Fees
You can choose to pay registration fees in full or in two instalments. Fees must be paid using the corresponding payment form and any of the following methods:
- Payment at the offices of one of the partner banks selected by the University of Granada.
- Online payment via your UGR's “Acceso identificado” Student Account.
Courses can only be changed if the corresponding classes have not yet begun. Typically, the registration modification period runs between 1 October and 27 February of the following year. Registration modification dates are set by the Governing Council each year and can be found on our website: http://escuelaposgrado.ugr.es/pages/masteres_oficiales/calendario_precios_publicos
Once the pre-registration process has ended, master's degree coordinators can provide a late registration letter if there are any vacancies on their master's degree programme. To be eligible, you must submit your application by 30 November of the corresponding academic year.
As with any other official degree, students of official master's degrees are eligible for grants offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education. Additionally, there are other organisations that offer grants to master's degree students.
