Grants for the Organisation of International Summer Schools at UGR Doctoral Schools

OBJECTIVE

To encourage the training of UGR doctoral students and promote their internationalization through attendance, alongside foreign students, at international summer schools taught by research staff from the University of Granada and other international centres. International projection of doctoral studies at the University of Granada and attraction of talent.

CONDITIONS

  • The grants will be awarded for activities taking place between 1 April and 30 September of the academic year.
  • Depending on budget availability, up to a maximum of nine grants will be awarded, three per Doctoral School. However, it is possible that more grants per Doctoral School may be awarded depending on the number of applications received/granted and their degree of cross-curricularity.
  • One grant per Doctoral School is reserved for the organisation of three “Arqus International Doctoral Schools”.
  • The total amount of these grants will be up to €45,000, based on up to €5,000 per International Doctoral Summer School.

This programme is of a complementary nature and its beneficiaries are subject to the commitment to apply for grants from the programmes supporting the organisation of academic and scientific events of the other funding agencies or bodies

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

These grants can be applied for by: a) coordinators of the doctoral programmes of the University of Granada and b) groups of lecturers from one or more doctoral programmes. The approval/endorsement of one or more Doctoral Programme Academic Committee from one or more Doctoral School is required.

The organising committees must comprise prestigious researchers from outside the University of Granada, including at least one member from a foreign research institution. In addition, the teaching staff must have prestigious researchers from outside the University of Granada, preferably including lecturers from foreign research institutions.

All of the schools must reserve 10% of the places for students from Arqus Alliance universities (Bergen, Graz, Leipzig, Lyon, Padua and Vilnius), excluding Granada.

The Arqus summer schools must offer cross-curricular activities (“transferable skills”) and at least three Arqus Alliance universities must collaborate in organising them.

The schools may organise online activities. However, those with a higher degree of in-person attendance will be favoured, provided the situation allows it.

DEADLINES, FORMALISATION OF EXPRESSION OF INTEREST AND APPLICATION

A period for the presentation of an expression of interest will remain open from the publication of this programme until 31 January 2021, with a decision on 10 February, and an application period will open until 2 March 2021, with a decision on March 10. Both will be presented in PDF format via email to actividadesdoctorado@ugr.es with the subject: “Expression of Interest International Doctoral Summer School” and “Application for International Doctoral Summer School”, respectively.

1. The expression of interest (maximum two pages) must contain all the following aspects:

a) Name.

b) Brief description of activity.

c) Multidisciplinary nature.

d) Coordinator (affiliation and email address).

e) Organising committee.

f) Group(s) involved.

g) Number of places offered.

h) Expected attendance (with an express breakdown of local and external teaching staff and students).

i) Duration and dates (approximate).

j) Funding requested (maximum €5,000).

k) Sources and amount of co-funding (the co-funding available must be equal to or greater than the amount requested).

l) Degree of in-person attendance.

m) Arqus Alliance universities involved, where appropriate.

2. The application (in Spanish or, preferably, in English, except in cases related to specific languages and literature) must contain the following documents: a) A report on the activities to be conducted. This must include the past record of the International Doctoral Summer School and the detailed programme, specifying the degree of in-person attendance, teaching staff and organising committee, and indicating the institutional link or origin of its members in each case.

b) Condensed curriculum (PLEASE NOTE: documents longer than 2 pages will not be considered) of each member of the organising committee and of at least 50% of the summer school lecturers. The URL of the lecturer's Researcher ID and/or Scopus must be indicated in the header of each curriculum, whenever possible. Teaching staff of the Arqus Alliance.

c) Budget of the activity, particularly specifying the details referring to registration fees and online activities.

d) Substantiated estimate of enrolled students and percentage of students from outside the University of Granada, particularly foreigners. Students from Arqus Alliance universities.

e) Internal and external co-funding and endorsements from organisations, institutions, scientific societies, etc. (Attach a copy of the applications for aid and endorsements).

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The University of Granada's Advisory Council for Doctoral Schools (CAED) will take the following into account as primary selection and assessment criteria:

  • The educational and scientific interest of the proposed summer school.
  • Degree of in-person attendance.
  • The multidisciplinary nature of the programme, both within and between Doctoral Schools.
  • Internationalization (defined as the presence of a significant number of participating students and lecturers from outside the University of Granada, particularly foreigners and those coming from Arqus Alliance universities).
  • The number and prestige of the teaching staff and of the organising committee.
  • The institutions that co-fund or endorse the summer school.
  • Past record of the International Doctoral Summer School, if reapplying.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE BENEFICIARIES

All the information will be published on websites prepared by the applicants, although they may rely on the support of International School for Postgraduate Studies (EIP) staff. The webpage will be prepared in English, except in cases related to specific languages and literature.

One month before the activity (excluding non-teaching periods), a list of the registered students indicating their university/centre of origin will be sent to the corresponding Doctoral School. If a minimum number of registered students is not exceeded, estimated at 75% of the total number of places offered and 40% foreigners, the grant may be withdrawn.

Once it has been completed, a report on the activity signed by the coordinator and at least one member of the organising committee will be presented at the International School for Postgraduate Studies (EIP) and will be published on the website of the respective Doctoral School. This report should indicate the participants and their centres of origin, as well as an assessment of the achievements in the internationalization of the doctoral programmes involved and in the attraction of talent.

It is also necessary to provide the budget settlement signed by the activity coordinator and at least one member of the organising committee, as well as a report on the academic achievements issued by the academic committees of the corresponding doctoral programmes endorsing the proposal.

Publicity for the event (posters and display on TV monitors in the centres) will be produced by the University of Granada's Communications Management Office (OGC). Any other similar publicity, as well as the website produced by the organisers, must allude to the support received from the corresponding Doctoral School and must contain the International School for Postgraduate Studies (EIP) logo.

INELIGIBLE EXPENSES

  • Social expenses: meals, receptions, etc.
  • Office or laboratory furnishings.
  • Construction.
  • Equipment repairs.
  • Contracts, bonuses, etc. for administrative support staff.
  • Contracts, bonuses, etc. for academic support staff.
  • Editing and publication expenses (except publicity and posters).
  • IT inventoriable equipment.
  • Purchase of software.
  • And all those not allocated to funding the training activities of the doctoral programmes of the University of Granada.
